Former PhD candidate and postdoc Berend van der Meer (SCM) has been awarded a Rubicon grant from NWO. With this grant, Van der Meer will be able to do research for two years at the University of Oxford (UK). The Rubicon programme is intended to give young, promising scientists the opportunity to gain international research experience.
In Oxford, Van der Meer will work on the project titled ‘Manipulating defects in crystals with light’. The (non-)deliberate insertion of lattice defects in crystalline materials forms the basis for many material properties. Using a strongly focused laser beam the researchers will apply defects in crystals and study their behaviour with a microscope. Read more here.
